I love quirky, original videogames, and the PSP actually has a good deal of them. Games like LocoRoco and Patapon have made the handheld keep my interest. Patchwork Heroes, Sony Japan and Acquire's newest title, has all the style and charm that I've come to expect from a quality PSP titles, but it just doesn't quite have enough there to make it truly shine.
Patchwork Heroes follows this group of pilot fighter guys who fly these vans with helicopter blades. There are these giant airships heading for their town, so as the main character, Titori, it's your job to destroy them. The entire game is presented with a side view of the airship, looking at the back of Titori as he crawls around like a spider on the hull of the ship.
The developer says the gameplay is inspired by cutting off random sections of a piece of paper, and that's really the best way to describe it. By pressing the Circle button players cut into the airship, and if they cut from an edge to an edge, a chunk of the ship falls off. Destroy enough of the ship and it crashes to the ground, but if it reaches the city first it bombs the crap out of it.
